These are lyrics from ‘Don’t Forget Where You Belong.” Its an amazing experience traveling, with all the thrill, excitement, new discoveries, dreams unwinding to reality but it isn’t an entirely joyous ride. As humans, we need the company of family-those people we grew up seeing. That’s why Aussie singer Cody Simpson feels the same; ‘I wish you were here…music is better…but right now I just wish you were near
I am writing this in Africa, Nairobi-Kenya. We receive many tourists who flock into the city every year. From Demi Lovato to Richard Branson, whose island Necker Harry styles has holidayed on. One Direction is one of the greatest bands I know even if I went back in time to Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Jonas Brothers, their uniqueness lies in their strength-strong team work and being the most closely-knitted band I’ve ever seen.
Liam Payne announced the “Take Me Home Tour” a the BRIT awards 2012, which would cover around his home area. Little did he know that it would take him to North America and Australia. By September 20th 2013, while performing on stage at The Round House in London, they had met the industry’s biggest names including Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and music producer Shellback.
The first thing that comes into my mind when the song starts off with a fairytale-esque tone, is the picture of a vast field with a mildly-cloudy sky, calm ambiance with no birds-just green grass to lie on and speculate. A lonely scenario that is instinctive-a call to go back home.It reminds me of upcountry, where I usually go to the river with my cousins, go out fun watching loaded with a free spirit and do endless fun stuff. It’s just nostalgic.
The song was inspired by Liam’s bouts of homesickness while on the tour.
“Luckily, I have my four best mates on the road with me to keep me from getting lonely.” he told Billboard Magazine. “Of course we all miss home at times. Who wouldn’t, being on the road all year long? Wouldn’t give it up for anything though.”
Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones and Dougie Pointer of British boy pop-rock band McFly (one of my favorites along Misha B, Jessie J, JLS,The Saturdays, Union J and Amelia Lily) helped pen down the song, having also wrote Take Me Home’s ‘I would’ before. The band told Digital Spy that One Direction is similar to them, and that they were glad to have the musical satisfaction of giving the boys good music.
The track is appealing to a more mature audience but still maintains that youthful glow. What I lacked in ‘Kiss You’ and ‘Live while we’re young’, that is acoustic sounds has been taken care of in this song and the other tracks of the Midnight Memories album. The guitar notes are promiscuous and hypnotizing. I am a Kenny Chesney-Avril Lavigne- G. Banford-Shontelle guitar lover and I can attest that ‘Don’t Forget Where You Belong’ is a really beautiful song. I’m looking forward to what the future of One Direction holds!
